As we approach the Thanksgiving season and the end of 2024, it’s a perfect time to give thanks for the changes, improvements and new products in the dairy industry. Here are five things we’re thankful for this year – what are you thankful for?
1. Innovative Dairy Products
This year has seen a surge in creative dairy food offerings that cater to diverse tastes and dietary preferences. From Byrne Dairy and Chobani Super Milk revolutionizing the milk industry with aseptic milk that lasts 9-13 months without refrigeration, to Kiid Coffee, a specialty coffee drink mix from a Georgia-based start-up that is made especially for kids, to all of the new yogurt, cheese and butter products, the dairy food industry knocked it out of the park in 2024. And we’re thankful for that!
2. Revival of Traditional Dairy Recipes
This year, there has been a growing appreciation for traditional dairy food recipes. Across the country, we’ve seen a resurgence of old-fashioned buttermilk, cultured creams and farmhouse cheeses, often made with local ingredients and minimal processing. Dairy companies and creameries are revisiting recipes passed down through generations, bringing a taste of nostalgia and heritage to the modern table. This trend not only supports local farmers but also offers consumers wholesome, flavorful options that celebrate dairy’s rich history.
3. Commitment to Sustainability
The dairy industry has made notable strides in sustainability this year. The Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy, a voluntary organization that works across the dairy value chain to foster collaboration and progress to build a healthy and sustainable future, continues its work. Several major businesses announced sustainable measures, including Nestle and Tesco. And, Elanco debuted a methane-reducing feed additive designed to reduce methane emissions in lactating dairy cows by approximately 30%. These initiatives represent a significant step towards continued and intentional environmentally friendly dairy farming practices.
4. Support for Dairy Farmers
Recognizing the challenges faced by dairy farmers, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) invested over $11 million to support dairy businesses and producers through the Dairy Business Innovation Initiatives grant program. This funding aims to enhance the development, production, marketing and distribution of dairy products, ensuring the industry’s resilience and growth.
5. Focus on Health and Wellness
There’s been a growing emphasis on health-oriented dairy foods. The introduction of high-protein yogurts and kefirs caters to consumers seeking functional foods that support digestive health and overall wellness. This trend reflects a broader movement towards integrating health benefits into everyday dairy consumption.
While there are many more dairy industry happenings that we are glad to celebrate, in the end, we are thankful for you, our dairy food customers. Thank you for supporting your local dairy farm families by purchasing milk, cheese, yogurt and the whole list of delicious dairy foods. As you sit down to your Thanksgiving table, laden with dairy-rich foods, we hope you will take a moment to offer thanks to our hard-working farmers and industry leaders as well.
